Fanfiction: It's for the Girls!
What is Fanfiction?
Fanfiction is a global phenomenon defined as fan created works based on existing literary works: TV shows, video games, anime, or even the public personas of celebrities and bands. There are few parameters for fanfiction beyond its basis on an “original” work; it is best categorized as transformative work. Every genre and trope imaginable has played out in fanfictions printed in fan magazines (zines), online archives, and personal blogs. Today, finding fanfiction is as easy as a quick Google search, and publishing fanfiction requires little more than an email address. The world of fanfiction is open to everyone, regardless of skill or ability.
Who's Writing Fanfiction?
Throughout its 50+ years of history, fanfiction has seen one demographic dominate in both its authors and readers: young women. Female fans have been historically the ones creating and shaping the fanfiction movement, and to this day the community is largely formed of young women posting, commenting, and collaborating.
