The Alternate Universe (AU)
Alternate Universe (AU) fanfiction is fanfiction that takes place in an alternate universe than the original work. This can be as simple as Sherlock and Watson working in a coffee shop and as complex as creating a timeline where Harry Potter never received his acceptance letter to Hogwarts. AUs place familiar characters in an unfamiliar setting; AUs tend to be focused more on character development than plot. For example, instead of giving Link, the pointy-eared protagonist of the adventure video game series The Legend of Zelda another dungeon to fight his way through, a fanfiction author could make Link a university student in a "college AU." How would Link's skills as an adventurer translate to navigating the college experience?
Popular AUs include college, barista/coffee shop, and soulmates.
AUs are a fun way to imagine how characters would react to new situations; they offer a way for the author to explore unfamiliar settings and situations, too. Many AUs are centered around transitional moments in life, like getting a new job or starting a relationship. Young female authors and readers can use AUs as a way to discuss their futures and examine the emotions that come with change.
