The answer is...everyone! Fandoms have their favorite pairings, of course, but it's rare to not be able to find a smut fic for a specific character. Pairings (also called "ships") are sometimes given cute portmanteau names, like "Spirk" for Spock and Kirk. There are different catergories of pairings within fanfiction, ranging from popular to "rarepairs" (a term used for pairings less common, though often beloved by a smaller community), to "crack" pairings, where two characters are thrown together for a more humorous than erotic result, often from entirely different works. No character within a work is safe -- even restaurants have been the subject of erotica.
Despite the endless possibilities, there is an unusual trend in erotic fanfiction: gay male pairings outnumber heterosexual, lesbian, and other relationships. Try this game with your favorite media: go to any fanfiction archival site and sort works in the media by popularity. One of the top three works will be a male/male pairing!
